Over the weekend, President Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick addressed the press regarding tariffs and the upcoming July 9 deadline. This date marks the end of a 90-day period set by the administration—referred to as “Liberation Day”—for countries to avoid steep tariff increases. The tariffs in question range from 10% to 25%, with some cases exceeding those levels.

President Trump indicated that the administration plans to send letters to as many as a dozen countries, warning of potential tariff rates as high as 60% to 70%. He did not specify which countries would be targeted. Secretary Lutnick emphasized that on July 9, letters would be issued to countries stating that if sufficient progress is not made, tariff rates could “boomerang” back to their original Liberation Day levels by August 1.

Later that evening, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent clarified that this does not represent a new tariff deadline. Nonetheless, the weekend’s remarks have further added to the confusion surrounding U.S. tariff and trade policy. The administration has yet to clearly outline what, if anything, will occur on July 9.

WDMA will continue to monitor these developments closely and advocate for stable, common-sense trade policies.

WDMA Hallmark Certification Activities

We completed another successful WDMA Technical and Manufacturing Conference last week with technical committees covering numerous issues and insightful presentations covering a broad range of topics from operations, safety, automation, legislation, regulatory issues and artificial intelligence applications in our industry. As John Crosby stated, “The conference wasn’t just about content—it was also about community”. WDMA and our partners have achieved many things over the years, but they are not done alone but with the WDMA community that promotes strategic thinking and long-term stability. Our organization works with many external entities to achieve our objectives with code and regulatory agencies, legislative actions, standards development and accreditations.

One of our long-term partners related to the Hallmark Certification Program is Administrative Management Systems (AMS) and they have been instrumental in the success of the WDMA certification programs. During the meetings we honored Administrative Management Services with a CEO Citation for 25 years of partnership with the operation of the Hallmark and NFRC Certification Programs. AMS has ensured objective, timely, and meaningful results for Hallmark Certification partners. They help WDMA maintain high standards and quality performance while ensuring we maintain our accreditation by the ANSI National Accreditation Board. AMS has been instrumental in the support of the program including all the technical items such as assisting with technical reviews and compliance with plant inspections and related activities. What is not so apparent is that AMS is always a steadfast silent partner with accreditations and program development. AMS has provided significant support for database management, document control, quality management systems and software development to enhance the operational efficiency of the certification programs.

Success should be shared by all, and it is my pleasure to acknowledge the entire AMS Team for their commitment and many contributions to WDMA and our membership over the last 25 years and I know that this is just the beginning of a continued strong partnership.

WDMA 2025 U.S. Market Study

The Window & Door Manufacturers Association (WDMA) will release the WDMA 2025 U.S. Market Study for Windows, Architectural Interior Doors, and Patio & Entry Doors this week to member companiesThis in-depth study outlines the historical trends, current status, and future projections of the industry's market size. Drawing on direct industry input for product shipments in 2024 and supplemented by additional primary and secondary research, this report provides a thorough benchmark of market trends. The Farnsworth Group, a nationally recognized market research firm, conducted, analyzed, and prepared the study.

WDMA asked Grant Farnsworth, President of The Farnsworth Group for a key data point: “68.3 Million -That's the number of residential window and door units shipped in 2024. This represents a modest decline year over year, while commercial shipments were flat. Uncertainty and affordability will keep growth limited in 2025 and beyond, as the industry grapples with capacity constraints and headwinds. And while consumer confidence, cost, and construction challenges remain in 2025, there is optimism for increased growth in the years to follow based on the fundamental demands for housing combined with low supply.”

  • Builder sentiment: Weak due to persistent affordability pressures; multiple reports cite growing price cuts and sales incentives.

  • Architectural billings: Mild stabilization in May, but still below growth threshold.

  • Retail sector: Sharp monthly decline, especially in auto sales; however, control sales rose 0.4%.

  • Inventories: Wholesale goods are down slightly MoM, with durable-goods inventories falling—suggesting some rebalancing.
